The fabulous cellist Rhonda Rider, who is on the faculty of Boston Conservatory and Boston University, has an upcoming CD, The Grand Canyon Project, to be released by MSR Classics laster this year. As part of the commissioned works for this project, Yu-Hui’s Rio del Tizon is included in this fascinating album. Rio del Tizon, which means Firebrand River, is an old Spanish name for the lower Colorado River, which carved out the Grand Canyon. Thus differentiates it from the other rivers that are also named Colorado.
Nine other pieces commissioned for this project are also included on this CD, they are written by David Rakowski, John Kennedy, Jan Swafford, Laura Kaminsky, Marti Epstein, Dalit Hadass Warshaw, Howard Frazin, Jeffrey Mumford, and Andy Vores. Yu-Hui's new work In Thin Air – for violin, piano, and percussion, was premiered by Dinosaur Annex in a successful three-concert series at Harvard University, Syracuse University, and Eastman School of Music. The program also included works by Annie Gosfield, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Daniel S. Godfrey, and Steven Stuckey. The critics called In Thin Air "… the high point of a remarkably strong program."

Yu-Hui’s Being – Two Collins Songs for a cappella chamber choir is included in Volti‘s upcoming CD “House of Voices“. Also on the CD are works by Ted Hearne, Donald Crockett, Eric Moe, Wayne Peterson, and Mark Winges.

Dinosaur Annex, the new music ensemble that Yu-Hui co-directs with Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin, has been invited to the 10th International Beijing Modern Music Festival in May 2012. New works by Chinese composers Xu Suya, Qu Xiaosong, and Wang Feinan, along with pieces by John Harbison, Scott Wheeler and Yu-Hui, will be performed by the Dinosaur Annex musicians on May 22nd.

Yu-Hui’s new piece, Pu Songling’s Bizarre Tales, was premiered at the Symphony Space by Music From China, with Yu-Hui conducting. Yu-Hui’s Tangled in Smoke, written for the fantastic pianist Amy Briggs, was included in Briggs’ “Tangos for Piano” CD. Mark Lehman in the 2011 March/April issue of the American Record Guide wrote: “Amy Brigg’s beguiling anthology of 22 concert tangos explores both approaches to the form… Nostalgic recreations of tango include Stravinsky’s 1940 Tango…and Yu-Hui Chang’s dreamy, oblique, disillusioned, and very beautiful Tangled in Smoke – my favorite piece on the program.” This CD was released in October 2010 under the Ravello label.
Yu-Hui is to be a Guest Composer at the Wellesley Composers Conference this July. Directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Mario Davidovsky for nearly 40 years, the Composers Conference is an annual two-week workshop for composers.
